I finished my math Thursday with a story involving geometric growth and “doubling.” After the show, 2 of the 3rd grade teachers told me they had just covered “doubling” earlier that day. My story, “The King, The Princess & The Jester,” was an excellent visual of the lessons the students had earlier.
To paraphrase John “Hannibal” Smith, “I love it when a show comes together.”
All of my science and math shows are built around the ideas, concepts and curriculum students will encounter throughout their academic careers. Sometimes they are introduced to a new concept, pother times, old concepts are reinforced.
The exciting thing though, is when a teacher tells me I have hit something the students are studying that particular week.
Last year, after my environmental science show, one of the teachers was delighted to share that my demonstration of temperature inversion was a perfect visual demonstration of what the students would be doing that afternoon. What a blessing to be discussing the very science the students would exploring that day.
