It\u2019s time for some kitchen chemistry\u2026here we go!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do I need:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Two glasses<\/li><li> A red cabbage<\/li><li>Baking powder<\/li><li> White vinegar<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/magicscientist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image.png?w=640\" alt=\"Red Cabbage experiment\" class=\"wp-image-312\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> <strong>How do I do it? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>STEP 1 <\/strong>&#8211; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>First the smelly part! Get your red cabbage and chop it up into fairly small chunks! <\/li><li>Next pop these red cabbage chunks in a pan of water and boil it for a few minutes. <\/li><li>You\u2019ll know that it\u2019s done when the water turns to a deep purple color.<\/li><li> Then strain you cabbage juice and pop it into a bottle!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong>STEP 2 &#8211;<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now we\u2019ve got our cabbage juice it\u2019s time to get properly started! Fill one glass with white vinegar and the other with water mixed in with a couple of teaspoons of baking powder!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong>STEP 3 &#8211;<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both of these liquids will be colorless! Now, add your cabbage juice to each of these glasses. <strong>You\u2019ll see your white vinegar turn pink and your baking soda turns blue!<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/magicscientist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-1.png?w=640\" alt=\"color changing liquids\" class=\"wp-image-313\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>STEP 4 &#8211;<\/strong> Just for fun mix the two liquids together!<strong> WARNING:<\/strong> This will make a mess!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/magicscientist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-2.png?w=640\" alt=\"It goes WHOOSH!\" class=\"wp-image-315\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> What\u2019s going on?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Your cabbage juice is what we scientist type people call an indicator. All that means is that it\u2019s something that changes color depending on how acidic or alkali the liquid it\u2019s in is! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(This is normally measured on a scale, called PH, acids have low PH values and alkalis have higher ones)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Cabbage juice turns red in acids (like your white vinegar) and turns to blue if it\u2019s in an alkali or even green if it\u2019s in a strong alkali! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ammonia will turn your cabbage juice green. Have an adult do this for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final part is the classic volcano experiment where your acid (vinegar) mixes with your alkali (baking soda) to create bubbles of carbon dioxide and a big mess too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong> More Fun Please &#8211; Experiment like a real scientist!<\/strong><br> \u2022 What else can you test to see if it\u2019s an acid or an alkali? \u2022 How many different colors can you make with your cabbage juice?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s something very special about science that smells bad and this experiment is no exception.
